On the outskirts of Phoenix is an old gold mine from the 1890's that had been abandoned, but turned into a tourist attraction. Here you can explore the historic town and see what things were like 115 years ago when miners were paid $1 per day (2-3x that if you ran the mineshaft). With the backdrop of the Superstition mountains:

I wish I had taken more shots of the mining town itself. But there were a lot of people and I am more of a landscape shooter, so I can't stand humans in my shots ;)
