I have been away for quite a while now, and this is due to the examinations in my last semester as an undergraduate and everything about school lately. And after a long time of going through unpleasant nights (and days too) of preparing for my exams, the time finally came when I took the final examinations and then "signed out."
As part of tradition in Nigerian universities, we do this "sign-out" thing where we (the graduating students) wear white tees on the last day of our final exams. And then right after the exams, we all use whiteboard markers to "sign" on random spots of our tees. We do that for one anotherโclassmates, friends, even strangers. This was last Friday, 3rd of February 2023.
This day was a long-awaited day; one that we have been longing for, simply because we really needed to get this school thing over with and liberate ourselves from the stress of being a student in a Nigerian university in this unfavourable economy. And when it was near, I couldn't help but be excited for it. I just had to maintain and put in the energy to study one last time.
I made some plans for that special day, including some for my department, as I am the class representative (Head of Class). The plans were primarily to dress for the occasion (which I never really do) and also record the moments through photographs and videos.
The Gentle-Bros
I have four other brothers in my departmentโnon-biological, actually. And so, in order to connect and potentially co-create in the future, we formed our brotherhood, the Gentle-Bros. We are just five. And then we all decided to wear a sort of uniform on that day of the sign-out. We made cargo pants of the same color, and then we all wore our individual jackets on top. Then we wore plain white tees on the inside of the jackets. We topped it up with sneakers of our choice as well.
We have some things planned for this brotherhood of ours, but it's all still in its infancy. I'm sure I'll tell you more about them as time goes on.
The Sign-Out
The day to write the final examination came, and all things were in place: the dress, the preparation (hours of study), and then the plan to take group photos and all just do one last thing together.
Our last examinations was a course that was kind of boring, so to say. You know all those courses that have very deep terms and require a lot of memorization? Yeah, it's one of those ones. But I had no choice but to, you know, read for my lifeโand also squeeze my brain in the exam hall.
We had never really taken group photographs in all our years of being in school, and so I thought to gather ourselves together after the examinations to make videos and take photographs too.
The Gentle-Bros, on the other hand, made videos beginning with the point at which we took a private vehicle (that we arranged) from our hostel to the examination venue. We'll make a vlog, which I'll post here someday.
When we finished the exams, we all went out to sing on each other's plain white tees while taking photographs and making videos as planned.
I had some of my dearest friends come over to celebrate with me, and we took photographs together.
I was really excited to see my friends come celebrate with me. It meant so much to me. They are amazing friends of mine that I cherish.
Exams and other obligations have kept me away from Hive for a while now. But now that I have more time, as the examinations are over, I can be back in this space fully.
It is time to jump on movies and TV shows that I have missed on Netflix. I have been lagging a lot with my goals for the year, but I already anticipated that I needed to finish school to bring them to fruition. Let's see how it all goes from here. For now, let's celebrate Olujay, the graduate. Heh...
