I hope you’re all doing well; I’m fine, thank God. As we do every year, at home we always try to give my mum the best Mother’s Day we can, within our means. Sometimes it’s simple things, other times something a bit more special if we can manage it, but in the end, what really matters is spending time together as a family.

This year, the day had something quite special about it. The first surprise was my sister’s return to Venezuela from the United States. My mum hadn’t seen her for two years, so you can imagine how exciting it was to have her back here at this time of year.

For my part, I decided to travel on Friday, firstly to catch up with my sister and secondly to spend Mother’s Day with my mum. In total, it was my dad, my two older sisters, my nephew and I sharing the day. My older brother is still in Colombia, and the memory of my other sister was also very much with us; we continue to feel her physical absence with great affection and sadness at how much we miss her.

The day started off quite well, with a special breakfast for my mum. We had empanadas, malted milk and coffee – something simple but which we still enjoyed immensely – and then came the presents.

Later, we had a special lunch of chicken, salad, tostones and soft drinks. By that point we were all pretty full, but we still had the afternoon outing to look forward to, ha ha ha.

We decided to go for ice cream at Heladería Palmert, which, to be honest, has become a favourite with loads of people in San Felipe. Those ice creams are massive; we were genuinely so full that there was practically no need for dinner afterwards.

Thank goodness, my mum was so happy all day long. Between the simple gifts we were able to give her, the food and, above all, the family togetherness, it made for a really lovely Mother’s Day for all of us.

Espero que se encuentren muy bien, yo bien gracias a Dios. Como todos los años, en mi casa siempre tratamos de darle a mi mamá el mejor Día de las Madres posible, dentro de lo que podemos hacer. A veces son cosas sencillas, otras veces un poco más grandes si se puede, pero al final lo importante siempre termina siendo compartir en familia.

Este año el día tuvo algo bastante especial. La primera sorpresa fue la llegada de mi hermana de vuelta a Venezuela desde Estados Unidos. Mi mamá tenía ya dos años sin verla, así que podrán imaginarse la emoción de tenerla nuevamente aquí en estas fechas.

Por mi parte decidí viajar el viernes, primero para reencontrarme con mi hermana y segundo para poder pasar el Día de las Madres junto a mi mamá. En total estuvimos mi papá, mis dos hermanas mayores, mi sobrino y yo compartiendo ese día. Mi hermano mayor sigue en Colombia, y también estuvo muy presente el recuerdo de mi otra hermana, donde su ausencia física seguimos sintiendo con mucho cariño y tristeza por la falta que hace.

El día empezó bastante bien, con un desayuno especial para mi mamá. Comimos empanadas, tomamos malta y café, algo sencillo pero que igual disfrutamos muchísimo, después vinieron los regalos.

Más tarde hicimos un almuerzo especial con pollo, ensalada, tostones y refresco. Ya para ese momento todos estábamos bastante llenos, pero igual todavía faltaba la salida de la tarde jajaja.

Decidimos ir a comer helados en Heladería Palmert, que sinceramente se han vuelto de los favoritos de muchísima gente en San Felipe. Esos helados son gigantes, de verdad quedamos tan llenos que prácticamente no hubo necesidad de hacer cena después.

Gracias a Dios, mi mamá se sintió muy feliz durante todo su día. Entre la sencillez de las cosas que pudimos regalarle, la comida y sobre todo la compañía familiar, hicieron que fuera un Día de las Madres bastante bonito para todos nosotros.
