Prince Godfrey Edokparogbuyurun Bassimi Eweka was born in 1899 two years after the banishment of his grandfather Ovonaramwen to Calabar. In 1907, he started school as a pupil in government school.
In late 1913/1914, he accompanied his father Aiguobasimwin to visit Ovonramwen in Calabar on the receipt of a telegram that the oba was ill.

On their way at Facados, news came that the Oba had passed on. He was left under the care of chief Ogbe an Itsekiri man. He never saw Ovonramwen as the king was banished before he was born.
He furthered his education at king’s college Lagos between 1918-1921.
