I believe that atheists should know the texts of different religions in order to be able to express their opinion and analyze objectively. In my case I have read both the Bible, the Srimad-Bhagavatam and even the Bhagavad Gita. Doing this is not a requirement to be atheists, but radically changes the approach to the topic and provides valuable intellectual tools. Skepticism is always more useful arguing.
