I am enchanted by the world. I saw leaves on a tree blowing in the humid, Southern breeze yesterday and it overwhelmed me with emotion. A flower petal dropped to the ground in my flower beds and a tear rolled down my cheek.
A wasp flew into the house yesterday and I caught it in a jar, and when I sat the jar down outside, it crawled up onto the top edge of it and just sat there, looking around. I don't know if it was confused, or afraid, or just enjoying, for a moment, the beautiful feeling of freedom and the outdoors again.
I think most people would have killed it. Wasps and bees terrify people at times, and their first reaction is to eradicate the scary parts of life from the world. But should we do that? Should we immediately destroy everything in the world which scares us?
I think not. That little wasp had more time in its life because I allowed it to. That is the nature of this world.. the big creatures decide the fates of the little ones sometimes. We are the big dogs, the giants of the land. We're destroying our homes with our greed and our selfishness. We pull the resources we need from the ground and from the water with no thoughts in our heads about what will happen when it's all gone in the future.
They say that there soon will be more plastic in the sea than there are fishes. Think about that. We've filled our sea with trash. I saw whales in the sea on 4 different trips in Cape Cod. Aside from Destin, Florida once, Cape Cod is the only place where I've ever seen the ocean. It haunts me in the most beautiful way.
I have to run for now, but I do hope you look around you in your world today and find something beautiful to haunt you later in life, when you miss the things that you have near you today. Stare at any tree intensely enough for more than 2 minutes and I am quite sure that you'll become enchanted with it as well.
Trees are mysteries to me. Wasps are miracles with wings. These are the really important things.
