Considerada una de las primeras novelas de misterio y suspenso de la literatura victoriana, "La Dama de Blanco", de Wilkie Collins es mi propuesta de rese帽a y que comparto aqu铆, desde mi pasi贸n lectora, con los amigos de hivebookclub.
"La Dama de Blanco" combina romance, intriga y cr铆tica social en una trama que se despliega con gran maestr铆a.
La historia comienza con Walter Hartright, un joven profesor de dibujo que llega a la Casa Limmeridge para instruir a Laura Fairlie y a su media hermana Marian Halcombe. El amor surge entre Walter y Laura, pero el destino se interpone: ella ha prometido casarse con el bar贸n Percival Glyde, cumpliendo la 煤ltima voluntad de su padre. Tras la dolorosa separaci贸n, Walter parte a las Am茅ricas, mientras Laura se une en matrimonio con Glyde, un hombre que pronto revela sus verdaderas intenciones: apoderarse de la fortuna de su esposa.

El bar贸n y su c贸mplice, el enigm谩tico Conde Fosco, urden un plan siniestro para despojar a Laura de su identidad y su herencia. En medio de esta conspiraci贸n aparece Anne Catherick, la misteriosa dama vestida de blanco, cuya vida est谩 marcada por secretos y un inquietante parecido con Laura. Su intento de advertirla fracasa, y la trama se complica con enga帽os, suplantaciones y un crimen que busca borrar toda verdad.
Marian, decidida y valiente, se convierte en el sost茅n de Laura y en pieza clave para descubrir la perversidad de Glyde y Fosco. El regreso de Walter a Inglaterra abre el camino hacia la justicia: juntos logran desenmascarar al bar贸n, revelando la falsedad de su t铆tulo nobiliario. Aunque Laura pierde su herencia, recupera su identidad y su libertad, y el amor con Walter finalmente puede florecer.
"La Dama de Blanco" es mucho m谩s que una novela de misterio: es un retrato de la lucha por la verdad frente al poder y la corrupci贸n, con personajes femeninos memorables y un ritmo narrativo que anticipa el g茅nero policial moderno.
馃摎 En hivebookclub, esta obra es una invitaci贸n a redescubrir los or铆genes de la novela de misterio y a debatir sobre c贸mo Collins logra mantener la tensi贸n y el inter茅s hasta el final. Considered one of the first mystery and suspense novels of Victorian literature, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins is my proposed review, which I share here from my passion as a reader with the friends of hivebookclub.
The Woman in White combines romance, intrigue, and social critique in a plot that unfolds with great mastery.
The story begins with Walter Hartright, a young drawing teacher who arrives at Limmeridge House to instruct Laura Fairlie and her half-sister Marian Halcombe. Love blossoms between Walter and Laura, but fate intervenes: she has promised to marry Sir Percival Glyde, fulfilling her father鈥檚 last wish. After the painful separation, Walter departs for the Americas, while Laura marries Glyde鈥攁 man who soon reveals his true intentions: to seize his wife鈥檚 fortune.

The baronet and his accomplice, the enigmatic Count Fosco, devise a sinister plan to strip Laura of her identity and inheritance. In the midst of this conspiracy appears Anne Catherick, the mysterious lady dressed in white, whose life is marked by secrets and an unsettling resemblance to Laura. Her attempt to warn Laura fails, and the plot thickens with deception, impersonation, and a crime meant to erase all truth.
Marian, determined and courageous, becomes Laura鈥檚 support and a key figure in uncovering the wickedness of Glyde and Fosco. Walter鈥檚 return to England paves the way to justice: together they succeed in unmasking the baronet, exposing the falsity of his noble title. Although Laura loses her inheritance, she regains her identity and freedom, and her love with Walter can finally flourish.
The Woman in White is much more than a mystery novel: it is a portrait of the struggle for truth against power and corruption, with memorable female characters and a narrative rhythm that anticipates the modern detective genre.
馃摎 In hivebookclub, this work is an invitation to rediscover the origins of the mystery novel and to debate how Collins manages to sustain tension and interest until the very end. If you enjoy well-constructed intrigues and characters who defy the conventions of their time, this reading will be a true delight.
