Check this lawn mower out!
I always kind of wanted one of these, and now it makes more sense than ever. The "old school" ones can be hard to come by sometimes, especially in a functioning condition, and newer ones can actually cost hundreds of dollars. I had been searching around for a while when I found this particular EarthWisemodel.
I found it when I was at a Menard's store up up in Missouri. Since the price was only about $100 USD and since it was brand new, I figured I would give it ago.
At home, I noticed that it was "some assembly required." I was passionate about trying it out soon, so, like a young boy with a set of Tinker Toys, I got started. Since it was easy enough that could do it, I'll give it an "A+" for ease of assembly. (At the same time I had also picked up my Wood Chipper, and paid a neighbor kid a few bucks to put that together for me... you've got to choose your battles, you know?)
Anyway, one of the things that impressed me about this model is the "bagger." It is easy to attach and detach, and collects the chopped grass very nicely. Here is a video where I share a bit about it.
PAPA'S REEL MOWER
MAKING THE MOST OF IT - AND GETTING THE ANIMALS INVOLVED
Having a mower that does not need gasoline or electricity to function is a big benefit in my book. Ideally, all of my expenses on this machine have already been paid. There is no oil to change, no air filter to replace, and no gas to constantly supply it with.
To make things even better, the fact that it collects the cut grass is amazing. Not only can it be a great mulch, an inexpensive way to add Nitrogen to the soil, and an excellent additive to the compost pile, but it also provides a great food supply for several of our animals.
The rabbits all know the sound of the mower now, and come running to the edge of their cages when they hear it. It is important not to give them too much, but these ones have grown accustomed to a mixture of grass clippings (which also include Clover, Plantain, and Dandelion) and their pellet food. Some people even raise rabbits on grass alone.
In addition to feeding it to our rabbits, the pigs and goats love it too. I simply dump piles of the clippings into their pens and they come running. Feeding animals "real food" is important to me, just like feeding my family "real food" it too. Since I like having a purpose for everything that I use, this works out very well. In the end, this is what I get out of the deal.
- Being able to mow my yard for free (all expenses paid upon purchase)
- Free garden mulch
- Free Nitrogen fertilizer
- Free compost additive
- Free animal feed
- A nice, cut lawn
After years of wanting one, I finally have one. Not only that, I bought it with SBD that I sold, so it is "STEEM-Powered" and funded by my efforts here on steemit. I would highly recommend this type of mower to others. As long as you are cutting the grass often enough to keep it relatively short, it works amazing. If you let the grass get seven or eight inches high, it is too tall to easily cut with this machine.
I know that I'll be using my reel mower for years to come. Have any of you ever used one of these, or do you have one now?
As always, I'm
