I love how much use can still be found in an abandoned garden!
Since we moved our garden site onto our homestead this year, the area that we had been using for the past two years is lying desolate. Well... not completely desolate as we are still getting "volunteer" seedlings to transplant and the occasional snack out of it too!
BENEFITS FOR EVERYONE & USING WHAT YOU'VE GOT
This white flowery section of the old garden site is a cluster of volunteer daikon radishes. One of the reasons that I like letting things go to seed is being able to see how well they grow the next generation on their own. This is just one example. Soon, this spot will be turned back into lawn, so we are trying to get out of it what we can while we still have the opportunity.
We like to allow our rabbits to enjoy a lot more than just pellet feed, so when we were heading over to the rabbits yesterday, we decided to stop and pick a few. Honestly, we were just hoping to feed them the greens, so the little radishes underneath were going to be a snack for us. Yay! Everyone gets free food!
Red-Pepper rinsed the radishes off for us after we broke off the greens for the rabbits. I really enjoy things like this, because when we pull up a free volunteer radish plant like this, nothing goes to waste. We can enjoy the root while the rabbits enjoy the stem and leaves, so ultimately, we are sharing a meal with our furry friends!
I think that the rabbits like this time of year too, because there are a lot more varieties of plants for them to enjoy too. In the summer, we get their diet up to over 50% greens and greatly reduce the pellets that they eat.
Here Pinkie-Pepper is feeding Runaway Rabbit a delicious daikon radish stem. She was recently bred, so in the next month we should have a new litter of cute baby bunnies!
These five siblings also got to enjoy a meal together! Much like our five , these rabbits are well mannered and ate all of their food. LOL!
As always, I'm
