When I was still new to being a War correspondent, the village of Nikishino was half controlled by "Rebel" LPR and DPR forces and half Ukraine forces. I came into town, to film at the "Rebel" positions, in the morning and soon after fighting started to erupt.
Fighting raged all day but eventually the fighting started to calm down. When it did I with two others were walking around a building, that prior to we were using to hide behind. As soon as the other two made it into the building/base I herd something strange next to me. I stopped and when it happened again I quickly realized that I was being targeted and shot at by Ukraine forces from the other side of the contact line(which was basically just 500-700 meters away).
I jumped into a barn and while I was being shot at I thought there was a good chance I was going to die. Many things went through my head.
I spoke to god, thought of my parents, friends and even contemplated what I would do if I was shot. It was by far the scariest moment of my life to that point.
I filmed this on the 12th of November 2014 just before the first winter of the Ukraine War was to set in. I am sure I would react in a different way now that I have many years of experience in battle under my belt.
