We had learned a lot skill from the project and yet many more to learn in our life. One of the skill that I learn was electing the scaffolding. At the time we don’t have scaffolding team at boiler master, we have to do everything. But one of our friend from Malaysia was holding scaffolding elector certificated and teaches us how to do. I love the job although it was so dangerous and tired. Carry the 6M pipe and joint another layer was most fun part and the plank to carry and walk on the pipe was amazing for me. Need to synchronized with co-worker to level the pipe, balance our self on the pipes and secure our self to knop or anchor point are feel like I am doing circus show. Tighten and suturing the plank is also another tricky job. All the pipe clip to throw and catch was part of fun as well. To elect from bottom up is most common job for scaffolder sometimes we do need to erect from the top down was a bit scary for us.
Sometime to grape overtime, we do blasting job. Carry the hoses is not easy and joint the hoses must be make sure extra suture, because it’s dangerous and cannot stop once it start. Handle the compressor to blow up the cement and feeding the cement non-stop is very tiring job. To communicate the gunner and machine controller we used walkie talkie and all the people are equal importance. We cast the cement powder mix with water and push with high pressure to stick on the wall. After stick the cement on the wall, we need to trim to get level of the surface. The job is too dusty and dirty, so only allow after 7PM to do the job. So that we can have over-time.
The most unwilling job was install the insulation Rockwool to prevent the hot surface for people or contain the temperature. It was very itchy and the fibre glass was stuck in the uniform and not easy to wash away. It is can go into the lungs and can damage. After placing the wool, need to cover with very thin aluminium or stainless steel sheet. Cutting the sheet was not easy at all, we need to know mathematic to calculate the shape to get right it.
One occasion in my life I won’t forget was, remove back all the Rockwool after dry out. All the Rockwool was burn and out of shape and flying when you touch it. It was hot in the furnace and collect back all flying the Rockwool was night mare for us. When we need to do thing, everyone unhappy yet still need to be done. While we doing this, one of the head supervisor was sitting at the manhole and waving $50 notes and said to us was “if you want this, you have to do it”. We are so angry, but we don’t have any choice.
Another skill I learned was driving forklift. At first I need to help forklift driver to open canvas cover and check the materials. At construction side, no shade only mud. When resting time I ask him to teach me how to drive. It is easy to operate yet first time driving was quite worry. It is need very much skill involved to become experience diver. The goods is first priority for the forklift driver all time. I pick up the skill and become reserve driver for the project.
Everything is new and all need to learn to survive in our life. Willing or un-willing, we still have to go through. At the end, we add our own value in our life for sure. Experience cannot buy and still is the best teacher in our life.
