Greetings everyone!
I oppose the idea of children receiving an allowance when they have not worked for it or earned it. A parent’s responsibility is to train their children to become the best versions of themselves through education, skills, and learning not to focus on earning money at a young age.
This is the best time for children to learn, develop, and cultivate good habits and character that will help them become valuable members of society wherever they find themselves. Teaching them about savings, financial management, and investment is important and beneficial, as it will help them in the future.
Since parents are already providing for their children, clothing them, feeding them, paying their fees, and giving them shelter and a comfortable home, that should be enough at their tender age. Introducing allowance too early may not be appropriate or rewarding.
However, I suggest that children should be encouraged to learn useful skills, such as how to use a computer system to ask questions and gain knowledge, rather than focusing on earning an allowance, which may overwhelm them at a young age.
Exposing children to allowance too early may not teach them its true value. They may not understand that earning money requires effort and hard work.
When I was a child, I remember breaking palm kernels for sale so I could get a dictionary to learn new words and their meanings. At that time, my parents could not afford to buy one for me, so I had to take responsibility for getting what I wanted. Through that experience, I learned that money is not easy to earn. It was difficult, I spent long hours breaking kernels, my hands were sore, my waist ached, and I couldn’t play with my siblings. But I was determined because I needed something my parents could not provide at that moment.
Allowance, on the other hand, is typically given to those who have worked for it. During my NYSC, I received a monthly allowance from the government, and my Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) also paid me for my work. It was rewarding and fulfilling. Even after my NYSC, I have continued to support myself, and I am grateful to God for His faithfulness. Now, I understand responsibility better, paying my bills and managing my finances wisely.
In my opinion, children are not entitled to an allowance. They should wait until the right time, so they can truly understand the value of money. Giving them an allowance too early may make them lazy or too comfortable.
