I have been knitting for a long time and I have almost one year publishing my creations at http://instagram.com/mercy_tejidos, so it occurred to me to investigate more about the benefits of this activity.
Knitting improves our manual motor skills: we have our hands in constant movement, which makes them go into heat and therefore prevents them from becoming stiff. Knitting exercises the two hemispheres of our brain: we are thinking continuously from the moment we choose the model or pattern to follow, the type of thread or wool, the needles ... all this stimulates our neural connections which keeps them active as we get older.
Knitting generates the "relaxation response": through repetition, a relaxation effect similar to that achieved when we practice yoga is achieved. This is why knitting is an activity that benefits our physical and mental health by decreasing heart rate, muscle tension and blood pressure.
Knitting helps to improve our mood: we can reduce stress hormones and increase the neurotransmitters of happiness, such as serotonin. This helps us to feel good about ourselves, increase our patience, concentration, self-confidence and self-esteem because with our own hands we are creating something unique.
Knitting promotes perseverance: it teaches us to achieve our goals and not give up if we do not have the desired result in the first attempt. Many times we must undo the amigurumis and start from scratch to succeed in what we have proposed; a lesson that we can apply in our daily life.
