I only had one eye on Liverpool's pre-season game against Bradford today due to the World Cup cricket final between England and New Zealand.
Nevertheless, it was another good run out for the lads and a 1-3 victory keeps this positive pre-season on track.
As always, pre-season games are generally about upping the tempo gradually over several weeks until the players are at full fitness levels by the time the new season begins. However, it's also about bedding in new additions to the squad and making sure that everyone is on the same page in regard to tactics and style of play.
A short note on style here, and I've been very impressed with the way that the youth players have slotted right in with Klopp's preferred pass and move kind of football. With most players looking to take 1 or 2 touches before releasing the ball, it makes for a very fluid game.
Milner scored Liverpool's first 2 goals in the game, but the name on every Liverpool supporter's lips at the moment, Brewster, came up with the 3rd to make it 3 goals in 2 games for the young forward.
Most people will realise that pre-season isn't the place to judge goal records. However, I have been very impressed with Brewster's ability to be in the right place at the right time. Having a forward with this kind of game intelligence allows you to grab easy tap ins and, if he can take that style of play into the first team, he'll be a very useful asset next season.
Perhaps my only worry at this stage is the fact that most of the first team squad aren't back in full training yet. With less than a month to go until the season starts, there is a worry that some players may be lacking in the fitness department. Although I believe Liverpool could continue to do well without any further signings, I would feel even better about the situation if we went out and bought an extra forward for a bit of increased depth.
Klopp likes to keep this kind of thing under wraps so there is every chance that this kind of signing could be completed in the near future. For now, it's another game down and another good result for the Reds.
