Hi fellow Steemians!
I invite you all to this 30-day Bible Literacy Challenge! The goal here is to improve the number of Bible verses we have memorized.
When I was in my 20's I was deeply impressed by a friend who could spout off Bible verses from memory. I was also deeply ashamed of myself. Although I had grown up in church, the only verse I'd memorized was John 3:16. I didn't want to have to try to explain to God why I only bothered to learn one thing He said to me my entire life.
That's when I decided to learn more. Lots more.
So I blew the dust of my Bible, sat down with a pen and notebook, and prayed. My prayer that day went something like this: "Dear Lord, please help me to memorize your Word. And as I read my Bible, please speak to me. And when you speak to me, I'm going to write that verse down; and when I write it down, please write it on my heart. Amen."
I now teach Old Testament and New Testament to college students, many of whom are starting right where I was that day.
Biblical literacy is a problem. It's a problem because if we are biblically-illiterate in an age where the Bible is so readily available to us, it is because we aren't pursuing God.
My goal with the Steemit 30-day Bible Literacy Challenge is to help you to memorize at least 1 Bible verse per day for 30 days.
It will take effort. Carry your verse with you. Let it be everywhere you look. Heed the words of Deuteronomy 1:8:
"You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
