En esta oportunidad quise hacer una publicación para comprender porque las razas de perros Pitbull se ha relacionado con ataques a las personas y la muerte de muchas de ellas. Cuando leo una noticia sobre estos sucesos tan lamentables, me da mucha tristeza tanto por las personas que resultan lastimadas como por el perro o los perros involucrados.
El perro ha sido compañero del hombre por muchos años, pero en ese proceso de domesticación que ha dado como resultado un animal generalmente dócil, amante de los niños, noble y protector, también se han desarrollado razas muy fuertes que el hombre a utilizado a su conveniencia para ciertas labores como el cuidado del ganado, la protección de las propiedades y también lamentablemente para la cacería y las peleas entre animales y este justamente fue el uso que se le dio a estas razas hace algunos años.
El pitbull se ha caracterizado por ser un perro de mucha fortaleza y agresividad y hay ocasiones en que algunos perros han atacado de repente, sin una razón aparente, a las personas, incluso a niños indefensos.
Estaba leyendo que el término pit bull, en general se utilizaba para aquellas razas de perros que se usaban en peleas en hoyos (pits), entre estas las razas American Pit Bull y American Stanford, nombres como fueron registradas. El pitbull es un cruce entre el Bulldog y el Terrier. En la descripción de la raza American Pit Bull Terrier se señala lo siguiente:
Los American Pit Bull Terriers procedentes de criadores certificados tienen un carácter equilibrado, son sociables, inteligentes, activos y de gran fidelidad.
El buen carácter de estos perros debe ir acompañado de una buena educación y adiestramiento.
De acuerdo a los trabajos que revise, en las características de esta raza, además de su fortaleza y agilidad, se hace referencia a que son cariñosos, protectores, leales, amantes de la diversión, afectuosos con los niños. Si esto es así, ¿porque se han incluido entre las viente más peligrosas y porque las estadísticas reportan que un alto porcentaje de agresiones a personas por perros, son atribuidas a estas razas?
Yo creo que la respuesta a estas preguntas está en la manera como estos perros son tratados por las personas que los crían y en que condiciones los mantienen.
Si un perro con estas características, es sometido a tratos crueles tales como el encierro y el mantenerlo amarrado durante gran parte o durante todo el tiempo, si además se utiliza sin ninguna consideración para proteger las propiedades y se le alienta durante su crianza a ser muy agresivo con las personas, que podemos esperar de este animal, que en otras circunstancias pudiera tener un comportamiento noble y cariñoso. Lo han enseñado a mostrar lo peor de su carácter y de su instinto de supervivencia, igual como ocurre con aquellas personas que han sido maltratadas y que reaccionan de manera agresiva contra la sociedad.
Si este perro, desde cachorro se cría como parte de la familia, en contacto con las personas y sobre todo con los niños, como generalmente se hace con las mascotas, este animal tendrá la posibilidad de mostrar lo mejor de su carácter. Si se le da amor, el responderá con amor. Tengo amigos que tienen perros pitbull como mascotas y son afectuosos y muy cariñosos con los niños y con la familia en general.
En los casos donde ocurren estos hechos, es el hombre y no el perro, el único responsable de la muerte de personas inocentes. Y es lamentable que entonces se sacrifique el animal, al considerarse que no puede mejorar su comportamiento.
Las leyes en vez de buscar sanciones, deberían estar más vigilantes del maltrato animal, ya que las consecuencias de este con algunas razas de perros, pudieran ser terribles no solo para el hombre, sino también para el perro, pensemos que el merece una buena vida y nosotros los seres humanos somos los responsables de dársela, así retribuimos el gran daño que le hemos hecho en el pasado y que algunas personas continúan haciéndole en el presente.

The dog has been man's companion for many years, but in this process of domestication that has resulted in a generally docile, child-loving, noble and protective animal, very strong breeds have also been developed that man has used at his convenience for certain tasks such as the care of livestock, protection of property and also unfortunately for hunting and animal fights and this was precisely the use given to this breed a few years ago.
The pit bull has been characterized for being a dog of great strength and aggressiveness and there are occasions in which some dogs have suddenly attacked people, even defenseless children, for no apparent reason.
I was reading that the term pit bull, in general was used for those breeds of dogs that were used in pit fights, among these the American Pit Bull and American Stanford breeds, as they were registered. The pit bull is a cross between the Bulldog and the Terrier. The American Pit Bull Terrier breed description states the following:

If a dog with these characteristics is subjected to cruel treatment such as confinement and being kept tied up for a large part or if not all the time, if it is also used without any consideration to protect property and is encouraged during its upbringing to be very aggressive with people, what can we expect from this animal, which in other circumstances could have a noble and loving behavior. It has been taught to show the worst of its character and its survival instinct, just as it happens with people who have been mistreated and react aggressively against society.
If this dog, from puppyhood, is raised as part of the family, in contact with people and especially with children, as it is generally done with pets, this animal will have the possibility to show the best of its character. If given love, it will respond with love.
In the cases where these events occur, it is the man and not the dog, the only one responsible for the death of innocent people. And it is unfortunate that the animal is then sacrificed, when it is considered that it cannot improve its behavior.
The laws instead of seeking sanctions, should be more vigilant of animal abuse, since the consequences of this with some breeds of dogs, could be terrible not only for man, but also for the dog, let's think that he deserves a good life and we humans are responsible for giving it to him, so we repay the great damage we have done in the past and that some people continue to do in the present.
