Horace
Horace is, along with Properz, Vergil, Ovid and Tibull, one of the most important Roman poets of the Augustan period.
His dicta and philosophical views were among the best known of antiquity until modern times. They experienced a rich reception in classicism and humanism. He took the classical literature of his time to new levels. Especially for the English classicism, he was a most important antique model.
His artistic development can be divided into three sections:
- The early work with its aggressive and temperamental epods and satires.
- Middle-aged maturity with the epistles and odes I-III.
- The late work, which is much more serene. The Odes IV, the Carmen saeculare and the Epistles II were written here.

Horaz
Horaz ist neben Properz, Vergil, Ovid und Tibull einer der bedeutendsten römischen Dichter der augusteischen Zeit.
Seine dicta und philosophischen Ansichten zählten bis in die Neuzeit zu den bekanntesten des Altertums. Sie erfuhren reichhaltige Rezeption in Klassizismus und Humanismus. Er beförderte die klassische Literatur seiner Zeit auf neue Ebenen. Besonders für den englischen Klassizismus stellte er ein bedeutendstes antikes Vorbild dar.
Seine künstlerische Entwicklung kann in drei Abschnitte unterteilt werden:
- Das Frühwerk mit seinen angriffslustigen und temperamentvollen Epoden und Satiren.
- Die Reife mittleren Alters mit den Episteln und Oden I-III.
- Das späte Werk, welches deutlich abgeklärter ist. Hier entstanden die Oden IV, das Carmen saeculare und die Episteln II.
