My university was renowned for its academic excellence, but behind the halls, corruption still takes root. A situation whereby lecturers demand bribes from students in exchange for good grades, administrators embezzle funds meant for research and infrastructure, and favoritism is rampant in admissions and hiring.
Let me share my own story with you all. In my early days in the university, as a newly admitted student going about my admission clearance, I proceeded to my school medical center for my clearance as early as 6:30 am. The place was already crowded with students; we were just standing outside, and nobody came to attend to us until about 2 pm, when someone came out to address the crowd that they had closed for the day. It was like what was going on, because we were just seeing students coming out from the office, none of whom were from the crowd of students outside. Everyone was so angry and frustrated; I just had to go back to the hostel.
On my way to the hostel, I stopped by a shop to get snacks because I was very hungry. There, I met a man who claimed to be working in the school medical center, in charge of the admission clearance. We spoke, and I told him how unfruitful my day had been since 6:30 am when I came out. This man offered to help, only if I could come out a bit earlier the next day. I thought he was just trying to be nice; I never knew he had other plans.
The following day, I made sure to be at the clinic before 6 am. Luckily, I saw the same man just at the door, and I was asked to go in immediately for my X-ray. After the X-ray, the results were supposed to be out the following day. The man requested that I give him my number so he could call whenever the results were out, which I did.
Immediately I got home that day, I got a call from the man, confessing fake love to me, that I should meet him up in a hotel outside the campus. Just hearing him speak alone was already irritating; I couldn't control myself but to insult him.
The next day, I proceeded to the school medical center to get my X-ray result. To my greatest surprise, I was told that my result was nowhere to be found; in fact, I didn't have any record with them showing that I came for the X-ray the previous day. I was shocked; I didn't know what to do. I had to call someone who was a member of the students' union government (SUG). I was told to call the man and pretend to play along with his games, but I should record all our conversations without him knowing. That's how I got evidence against him. He told me to come get my X-ray result, and from there, we'll proceed to the hotel.
I made sure I didn't go alone; I went with a member of the SUG who was standing outside while I went into the man's office for my X-ray results. This man actually brought out the results from his drawer; there was no way I could have laid hands on the results from anyone else aside from him, because none of the staff there would have thought he could do a thing like that.
Immediately I collected the results from him, I made sure he listened to the voice recording I did, and promised I was going to hand it over to the SUG for the public to know what he had been up to. And to prevent other students to fall victim too.
Thank you for all your supports and votes they all mean alot to me.
