Established on 18 December 2008, Jiu Huang Dian (The Nine Emperor's Palace) has a history of 9 years. Even though it may be considered as a relatively young temple, it has a strong emphasis on traditions, with the Nine Emperor Gods Festival as the main celebration event every year.
The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is celebrated during the first nine days of the ninth month in the Lunar calendar. During the period of the festival, devotees have to stay vegetarian to portray their respect to the Nine Emperor Gods. It originates from the belief our forefathers had, which is to purify our bodies before paying respect to the Gods. Furthermore, all devotees are required to be fully dressed in white, with a white headband and yellow ribbon around their waists. The white headbands and yellow ribbons have to be stamped with “Jiu Huang Da Di” in red.
There are several reasons behind being fully dressed in white.
Firstly, it was believed to be able to scare the pirates by wearing white along the sea shore during the Song dynasty when pirates are prevalent.
Secondly, it is believed that the Nine Emperor God’s favourite colour is white.
Lastly, wearing white symbolizes paying respect to our ancestors.
