May I introduce you to Mrs Hermetia Illucens who visited my backyard worm farm last year.
Mrs Hermetia Illucens does not eat or sting and is not vector or considered pest. She will live for 5-8 days and will only try to mate and oviposit (lay eggs). She will find a dry spot adjacent to a decomposing food source. Her eggs are oviposited in cluster of an average of 500-800 eggs.
Her eggs will hatch four days later and her offsprings will start eating like crazy and reach maturity in a short period of time that can be as little as two weeks.
In a next post I will introduce you to the larvae and composting food waste with their help.
