Tallinn is the capital of the Republic of Estonia and the county of Harju . It occupies an area of 159.2 km² in which 446,055 inhabitants live, which makes it the most populated city in Estonia and its main port. It is located on the north coast of the country, on the shores of the Gulf of Finland , 80 km south of Helsinki, from which it can be reached via ferry.
Tallinn is the political and economic center of Estonia. The city arose like a commercial port in the marine route that united Western Europe with Russia and knew its maximum apogee as Hanseatic city in the middle age . After the independence of Estonia in 1991 Tallinn has resurfaced again, this time through tourism and a firm commitment to new technologies.
It is believed that the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland was inhabited by Finno-Ugric tribes from the second millennium BC. Tallinn became important as a strategically located port between Scandinavia and Russia , which made the city the target of the Germanic religious-military orders and the Kingdom of Denmark during the period of the Baltic Crusades , at the beginning of the 13th century .
The old city of Vanalinn is located in the center of Tallinn, south of the port. In it the low and high city (Toompea) are distinguished, to the east is the nineteenth-century city where the modern financial district is recently growing. To the west is the zone of expansion of the Soviet era in which the characteristic buildings of Soviet style abound.
The city of Tallinn is characterized by its medieval towers in the center and its Soviet-style buildings on the periphery. Since the independence in 1991, but especially since the economic boom experienced by Estonia at the beginning of the 21st century , Tallinn has undergone a strong transformation. The center has been rehabilitated and infrastructure has been created to cover the new demand for leisure and tourism. The historic center was declared a World Heritage Siteby UNESCO in 1997
