I was lucky enough to make some money last year on Steemit with the articles I published.
These days, that's changed, for me, and for a lot of other people. And it's not only on this website, but everywhere.
Writing is one of those things that is easy to pick up, but hard to master. Thing is, you don't need to be a master at writing to get people's attention. A lot of mediocre writers get thousands of views with their work, while people who can tell incredible stories are ignored.
That's just how things work. The Internet is filled with articles, with all kind of stories and news, and no one has time to read them all. We have to be selective, and it's hard to find something we like in all the pile of writers that publish content every single day.
Because of that, making money as a writer is harder than ever. Even if you publish real books, it's gonna be hard for you. There's a lot of competition out there, and even if you ignore that, your book will probably be either ignored, or pirated by those who don't want to buy it or simply can't afford it.
It's easy to imagine that you'll just create a blog and publish on it as often as you can, until you'll get a few thousands of views every day, an audience you can talk to and a community that will be there to support you no matter what you want to do.
But once you realize how hard it is to get even a little bit of attention in a medium like the Internet, where millions of people have the same goal as you, then motivation may simply vanish and you'll be stuck, not knowing what to do.
My advice - don't write for money. Don't look at writing as being a job. Do it as a hobby. Do it to keep yourself busy and to share your ideas. At least for a few months or even years.
Unless you're extremely lucky, not a lot of people will notice you when you'll start publishing, no matter what website you use. It will be months until someone will see your work, and even then, there's no guarantee they'll like it.
Starting to write thinking you'll start making money soon enough to be able to pay for all the things you need to live, is a dream that is too hard to make reality. Competition is high, and unless you have something to offer that is better than what already is there, or unless you have something unique you can share, then you're not gonna make it in time.
It's nice to fantasize about becoming a blogger and working from everywhere. Sadly, it's not that easy, and you'll only realize that once you start writing. So, take it as a friendly advice - look at writing as a hobby, not a job.
