One of the catchiest hip-hop tracks I've heard in awhile (video)
Fun fact: did you know that Cut Chemist's song from his first album The Audience's Listening "What's The Altitude" is one of the most viewed videos on YouTube, sitting at a staggering, mind-blowing count of over 100,000,000 views? Bet you didn't know that.
So it's been awhile since I've checked with Cut Chemist, one of my favorite DJs and record collectors. And that partially might be because the man hasn't released a full solo album in close to 12 years, but also because while I did enjoy The Audience's Listening to a certain degree, I wasn't the biggest fan of it. So even though it's been quite some time since his last artist album, I wasn't all that excited to listen to Die Cut. The few tracks I had heard from it, cuts like "Metalstorm" and "Work My Mind" were alright, they weren't really what I was looking for from the Jurassic 5 DJ/producer.
All that changed however when I saw that the new album featured a cut from everyone's favorite hip-hop madman, Biz Markie called "Moonlightin' With Biz", and boy oh boy did it give me exactly what I wanted. Biz hasn't changed his style at all, still giving you his old-school, idiosyncratic flow with some extremely simple but playful lyrics, as well as a few bits of his signature beat boxing as well. Where the track really shines to me is in the simple but brilliant beat; taking a warped-sounding, mellow, psychedelic soul loop, adding in some kick ass drums, and hook that'll get stuck in your head the moment you hear it. It's not the most mind-blowing hip-hop track you'll ever hear, it is definitely one of the most effective and ear-catching I've heard in awhile. And if anything, this track has me much more curious to hear what else is on Die Cut than before.
Cut Chemist's new album Die Cut is out now!
