Hello everyone..
Today I would love to share another research in steemit. This study was to search correlation between the severity of depression and serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) level in patients with uncontrolled ashtma bronchial. It was conducted at Mohammad Husen Hospital of Palembang , Indonesia.
Background
Psychiatric signs and symptoms are common in patients with chronic somatic diseases such as bronchial asthma. From a neurobiology perspective, several hypotheses explain the onset of psychiatric symptoms in patients with asthma. Systemic inflammation becomes the key link between these conditions and studies show that cytokines have an indirect role in the neurotransmission of the central nervous system. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) serum is found in various inflammatory diseases. Interestingly, elevated serum IL-6 levels were found in asthmatic patients.
Methods
The study design was a correlative analytic design with a cross sectional approach. The study was conducted at Polynomial Allergy Immunology of Mohammad Husen Hospital. This study start from July 2014 to December 2014. Subjects of the study were 42 patients with uncontrolled asthma and depression based on the BDI score (Beck Depression Inventory). Serum IL-6 levels were examined.
Results
Serum IL-6 concentration was obtained with median 1.78 (0.56-6.04) pg/mL. The severity of depression based on the BDI score obtained mild depression 29 subjects (69%), severe depression 7 subjects (16.7%) and moderate depression 6 subjects (14.3%). There was a weak positive correlation (p = 0.018, r = 0.364) between severity of depression and serum interleukin 6 levels in uncontrolled bronchial asthma.
Conclusion
The higher levels of Interleukin-6, the more severe depression in uncontrolled bronchial asthma patients.
