So the camera is fun to have and I'm slowly learning the very basics. Like focusing!
We are so used to the auto-focus of our phones and using fingers to point where to focus that when faced with this monstrous multi-buttons focus..well, overwhelming! But I slowly learned how this works so now I took some better photos.
This post is not about those photos, is more about some thoughts about the need for a 7-year old camera in the age of iPhones. As I said, many friends said is useless but researching online I found more philosophical approached to this.
For example: it is very very slow. It taked like 4 seconds to load up and 3 to write a photo on the card. It takes its sweet time. I find myself giddy to push again and again the button but..no. I have to wait and think. This puts you in a very different mood. Finding the right focus, trying the right setting..a photo with a camera becomes something you build vs something you take. There is pride in it.
Second idea that was suggested by a veteran was that the camera will lead to different photos by the very nature of its existence. What he means is that people react differently to someone taking a photo of themselves with a Fuji, a dslr or an iphone. The medium is the message again? Maybe not, but certainly influences the message.
Also, what I really want is to take photos of people ..portraits. So I thought that a guy with an iphone and "hey can i take a photo" is very different from a guy with a nice little camera coming to say the same thing. Not only the results would be more interesting, but I could be more confident that it is worth their time and that finally, they'll also be curious to see how it looks. Everyone takes selfies and photos with iphone afterall..been there done that.
We'll see if this theory holds water as I gather enough guts to say "hey, do you mind if..."
I'll keep ya posted.
