In the heart of the old town of Chiang Mai City stands this towering Lanna-style chedi built in 1441. A powerful earthquake struck in 1545 and demolished 60 metres off the top and it was partially restored in the 1990's.
It's very difficult trying to shoot temples in Thailand as the chinese tourists tend to walk in front of the camera and block the view, so you have to be patient and not cause a commotion.
Large staircases on all four sides are flanked by guardian mythical Naga creatures, they look very impressive.
Below the top of the stairs is a platform containing Sinhalese style stone elephants on one side emerging from the chedi(pagoda)
Most of the general buildings in the city a have a very mundane concrete look to them and plastered over, the temples (wats) are the only really attractive buildings apart from a few impressive government buildings which look very pleasant.
