Hello friends. I believe one of the most interesting aspects of traveling is that expectations and reality don't always align. Sometimes a place you’ve dreamed of for months can leave you disappointed, while a random street corner you never gave a second thought to can turn into a lifelong memory. Córdoba in the center of Andalusia, was exactly that kind of experience for me. While the main landmark I came to see turned out to be a major letdown, the city itself completely enchanted me with its unexpected beauty. This trip reminded me once again how valuable it is to step off the planned routes and stay open to the surprises a city has to offer. I want to talk about my discoveries in Córdoba that flipped my expectations upside down, from disappointment to pure admiration.
The famous Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (Castle of the Christian Monarchs), which was one of the primary reasons for my visit, was unfortunately the biggest disappointment of the trip. While I had planned to spend at least two hours inside, we found ourselves back at the exit after just 25 minutes. We were shocked to find that a large section housing the castle's most beautiful fountains and gardens was completely closed for renovation. The fact that there wasn't even a tiny warning on their website made me feel like the 6.50 Euro entrance fee wasn't worth it. The experience felt so incomplete that the castle actually looked more impressive from the outside than it did from the inside. It’s not about being spoiled. It’s just that the place should be much better, at least twice as good. One day it will be, but that day is not today.
In total contrast to the disappointment at the Alcázar, the city of Córdoba itself completely impressed me. Expectation and reality worked in reverse here: while my high expectations for the Alcázar ended in disappointment, my low expectations for the city turned into immense admiration. With its historic buildings, charming narrow streets and countless cozy taverns, Córdoba felt like a local Florence. Every corner offered a different kind of beauty, inviting you to explore. As for the city, it was the opposite. I wasn’t expecting much and it is absolutely wonderful.
One of the main characters of the Córdoba experience was undoubtedly the sweltering heat. Forecasts were showing 43-45 degrees and this extreme temperature completely dictated the rhythm of life in the city. Here are a few observations about the heat: the only times you could comfortably walk around were either very early in the morning or after 10:00 pm. Surprisingly the hottest part of the day was around 6:00 PM. My phone got so hot that the stabilization feature turned off automatically and the screen switched to dark mode on its own to reduce heat. However, the moment you escaped the scorching sun and stepped into the narrow, shaded streets of the old city, you felt instant relief. Interestingly despite the intense heat and high UV index, I noticed that the sun burned the skin slower than expected.
And another highlight of my time in Córdoba was the chance to experience authentic culture for free. We discovered a terrace where a flamenco show starts every night at 10:00 pm, open to everyone for free until the venue is full. For someone seeing live flamenco in Spain for the first time, this was a priceless opportunity. A pro tip to make the most of it: get there at least 20-25 minutes before the show starts to snag a good spot.
The coolest thing about Córdoba was how it felt like a total mix of different cultures. Walking through the city, you felt as if you were visiting several different countries at once. One moment, you’re crossing the ancient Roman Bridge and it feels like you're in Florence. Then you turn into a narrow alley and suddenly feel like you're in Marrakech, surrounded by Moorish motifs, Moroccan-style gardens and remnants of old baths. By the time you reach the end of that street, a lively square with countless tapas bars and cheerful crowds lasting late into the night brings you back to the pure Spanish spirit. In short it’s the perfect city to visit if you can't decide between Italy, Spain and even Morocco.
Córdoba is just one of those places that reminds you how beautiful surprises can be. Even if your plans fall through, there's always something unexpected right around the corner waiting to blow you away.
