Situated on the West bank of the Ganges, Varanasi, also known under the name of Benares, is an important holy city at the same time for the Indians and the Buddhists. According to the legend, it was established by the Indian god Shiva 5000 years ago, although modern researchers think that it is old of about 3000 years.
