En artículos anteriores ya he tocado el tema de algunos de los géneros del manga y el anime como son el Shounen, el Shojo y el Seinen.
Hoy quiero que conversemos sobre otro de los géneros que se ha vuelto muy popular últimamente:el Isekai.
Si has visto anime de los últimos 5 años, tienes una alta posibilidad de haberte encontrado con un isekai.
En este género, el protagonista muere o casi muere, despierta en un mundo fantástico y comienza una nueva vida. Parece simple ¿verdad? Sin embargo este género se ha vuelto muy popular en el anime moderno así que vamos a explorar qué es y cuáles son sus características que lo han convertido en un género tan popular.
Comencemos definiendo qué es el isekai. Esta palabra literalmente significa otro mundo en japonés. En el manga y el anime este género se refiere a historias donde un protagonista es transportado, reencarnado o despierta en un mundo completamente diferente a donde él vivía.
Pero esto no es solamente viajar de un lugar a otro. El protagonista viaja a otro mundo que por lo general es un universo fantástico con sus propias reglas, magias y sistemas. Comienza débil o sin poder y a medida que avanza la historia se va volviendo increíblemente poderoso.
Vamos a ver cuáles son las características fundamentales del isekai.
Aunque hay mucha variedad en este género, la mayoría comparten ciertos patrones que se repiten y son reconocibles.
En primer lugar tenemos la transportación. El protagonista muere, es atropellado por un vehículo o sencillamente se despierta en otro mundo. Suele haber algún tipo de Dios o entidad que lo envía allí como un castigo o recompensa.
Como segunda característica tenemos que el mundo al que llega el protagonista es un mundo fantástico. Por lo general estilo medieval con magia, monstruos, reinos y sistemas de poder que están claramente definidos. Muchos de estos sistemas de poder cuentan con niveles como en los videojuegos.
Como tercera característica tenemos que cuenta con un sistema de poder. Este es un punto muy importante. Muchos de los isekai tienen un sistema de manera explícita donde el protagonista puede ver su nivel, las habilidades que tiene, su experiencia, como si el mundo fuese un videojuego.
La cuarta característica de los isekai es que tiene una forma de progresar rápida. Con esto nos referimos a que el protagonista comienza siendo débil y rápidamente escala convirtiéndose en extremadamente poderoso. Este desarrollo suele ser en ocasiones demasiado rápido.
Y como quinta característica podemos notar que existe un harén aunque esta característica puede ser opcional. Muchos de los Isekai incluyen múltiples personajes femeninos que están interesados románticamente en el protagonista. No suele ocurrir en todos los Isekai pero es un patrón que se repite el cual es bastante común. También podemos ver lo que llaman harén inverso: una protagonista femenina con múltiples personajes masculinos interesados en ella.
Ahora veamos algunos ejemplos de manga o anime del género Isekai.
"The Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime": en este Isekai, el protagonista reencarna como un slime o una gelatina. Algo un poco absurdo pero brillante, ya que el slime puede absorber cualquier cosa, aprender habilidades y volverse poderoso.
El siguiente ejemplo es "Re: Zero". Este Isekai es un poco más oscuro donde el protagonista obtiene la habilidad de viajar en el tiempo cuando muere pero con cada viaje la experiencia se vuelve más traumática. Este Isekai explora las consecuencias psicológicas de las decisiones que se toman y los cambios que ocurren a través del tiempo.
También podemos mencionar "Sword Art Online", que aunque técnicamente no es un isekai de la manera tradicional, ya que el protagonista entra a un videojuego y no a otro mundo, se volvió muy popular por muchas de las características del género Isekai convirtiéndose en un anime bastante influyente.
También tenemos el caso de "Overlord" donde el protagonista es un mago poderoso que es transportado de otro mundo. Acá no tenemos un héroe sino un villano que construye su propio imperio siendo este un isekai desde las perspectiva del villano.
Y finalmente tenemos "Konosuba" el cual es una burla al género del isekai. En esta historia el protagonista es enviado a otro mundo pero es un protagonista completamente inútil. Su equipo es un desastre y se usa el isekai como una comedia.
Ya nos estaremos preguntando por qué él Isekai es un género tan popular.
Es aquí donde tenemos que enfrentar una verdad incómoda: este género se afianza en las fantasías del poder y el escapismo donde en un mundo real eres un estudiante o un trabajador promedio y en el mundo Isekai eres El elegido, eres el más fuerte y al que todos respetan.
En este género tenemos el deseo de poder disfrazado de entretenimiento lo cual realmente no es malo ya que el género de fantasía siempre ha sido sobre escapismo de la realidad.
Pero hay algo más: este género le permite a los creadores reiniciar a los personajes. Si tu personaje es débil en un mundo real en el Isekai puede ser poderoso permitiendo explorar la pregunta de ¿quién serías realmente si pudiera ser cualquiera?
Este género a pesar de su popularidad ha contado con una dura crítica ya que, al revisar honestamente, muchas historias son mediocres. Se encuentran montones de Isekai genéricos donde el protagonista simplemente es transportado de un mundo a otro y se vuelve poderoso de una manera muy genérica lo cual hace que carezcan de originalidad.
Al utilizarse los mismos sistemas de poder, las mismas dinámicas de harén y la misma formas de transportarse esto lo convierte en una fórmula y la fórmula tiende a volverse aburrida.
Dentro de los mejores Isekai está "Re:Zero," "Overlord" y "Konosuba" y estos Isekai funcionan porque exploran de una manera profunda la premisa de cómo funciona el mundo Isekai, alejándose de usar el género como una excusa para darle a su protagonista un poder fantástico.
A pesar de las críticas no se puede negar que el Isekai es un género bastante fascinante ya que puede revelar lo que quisiéramos ser explorando nuestros miedos sobre el ser insignificante así como el deseo de ser importante convirtiéndolo en escapismo puro a la realidad.

In previous articles I’ve already touched on some manga and anime genres such as Shōnen, Shōjo, and Seinen.
Today I want us to talk about another genre that has become very popular lately: Isekai.
If you’ve watched anime in the last five years, you have a high chance of having come across an isekai.
In this genre, the protagonist dies or almost dies, awakens in a fantasy world, and begins a new life. It sounds simple, right? However, this genre has become very popular in modern anime, so let’s explore what it is and which characteristics have turned it into such a popular genre.
Let’s start by defining what isekai is. This word literally means “another world” in Japanese. In manga and anime this genre refers to stories where a protagonist is transported, reincarnated, or awakens in a world completely different from the one he lived in.
But this is not just traveling from one place to another. The protagonist travels to another world that is usually a fantasy universe with its own rules, magic, and systems. He starts weak or powerless and, as the story progresses, becomes incredibly powerful.
Now let’s look at the fundamental characteristics of isekai.
Although there is a lot of variety in this genre, most share certain patterns that repeat and are recognizable.
First, we have transportation. The protagonist dies, is hit by a vehicle, or simply wakes up in another world. There is usually some kind of god or entity that sends him there as a punishment or reward.
Second, the world the protagonist reaches is a fantasy world. Usually medieval‑style with magic, monsters, kingdoms, and clearly defined power systems. Many of these power systems have levels like in video games.
Third, there is a power system. This is a very important point. Many isekai explicitly show a system where the protagonist can see his level, the abilities he has, his experience, as if the world were a video game.
The fourth characteristic of isekai is that it has a rapid progression. This means the protagonist starts weak and quickly scales, becoming extremely powerful. This development is sometimes too fast.
And as a fifth characteristic we can notice that there is a harem, although this can be optional. Many isekai include multiple female characters who are romantically interested in the protagonist. It does not happen in every isekai, but it is a common repeating pattern. We can also see what is called a reverse harem: a female protagonist with multiple male characters interested in her.
Now let’s see some examples of manga or anime in the Isekai genre.
“That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime”: in this isekai the protagonist reincarnates as a slime. A bit absurd but brilliant, because the slime can absorb anything, learn abilities, and become powerful.
The next example is “Re: Zero”. This isekai is a bit darker where the protagonist gains the ability to travel in time when he dies, but each travel makes the experience more traumatic. This isekai explores the psychological consequences of the decisions made and the changes that occur through time.
We can also mention “Sword Art Online”, which although technically not an isekai in the traditional way, since the protagonist enters a video game and not another world, became very popular because of many of the characteristics of the Isekai genre, becoming a quite influential anime.
We also have “Overlord”, where the protagonist is a powerful wizard who is transported from another world. Here we do not have a hero but a villain who builds his own empire, making this an isekai from the villain’s perspective.
Finally we have “KonoSuba”, which is a spoof of the Isekai genre. In this story the protagonist is sent to another world but is a completely useless hero. His team is a disaster and the isekai is used as comedy.
Now we may wonder why Isekai is such a popular genre.
Here we have to face an uncomfortable truth: this genre is rooted in power fantasies and escapism, where in the real world you are a student or an average worker, and in the Isekai world you are the Chosen One, the strongest, and everyone respects you.
In this genre we have the desire for power disguised as entertainment, which is not really bad since the fantasy genre has always been about escaping reality.
But there is something more: this genre allows creators to reset characters. If your character is weak in the real world, in the Isekai they can be powerful, allowing the story to explore the question of who you would really be if you could be anyone.
Despite its popularity, the genre has faced harsh criticism because, honestly reviewing it, many stories are mediocre. There are countless generic Isekai where the protagonist is simply transported from one world to another and becomes powerful in a very generic way, which makes them lack originality.
Using the same power systems, the same harem dynamics, and the same methods of transportation turns it into a formula, and formulas tend to become boring.
Among the best Isekai are “Re: Zero,” “Overlord,” and “KonoSuba.” These work because they explore the premise of how an Isekai world functions in depth, moving away from using the genre as an excuse to give the protagonist fantastical power.
Despite the criticism, one cannot deny that Isekai is a fascinating genre because it can reveal what we would like to be, exploring our fears of being insignificant as well as the desire to be important, turning it into pure escapism from reality.
