Cabbage and potato are already a perfect combination as a winter recipe. In our region, we mostly get cabbage during winter. So you can say that we wait for the whole year for this recipe. Also, it tastes best at this time. And as a bonus this time, I added some air potato to the dish.
You may wonder what is air potato!
It's like regular potatoes but this plant is crapper. And instead of growing in the ground, it grows in the plant, hanging from the trees. That's why it got the name. It tastes more like yum or I would say taro. The taste is quite significant and I liked it.
If it's not available to you, use regular potatoes. Don't worry.
Let me share my recipe.
Ingredients.
- Cabbage (1 full)
- Two big potatoes
- Two tomatoes
- Bay leaves and cloves
- Onion
- Cooking oil
- Salt, turmeric, and red chili powder
The recipe is very simple. If you want, you can skip some or add more vegetables to the dish. Like you can skip the hot spices if it's not available to you. Also, you can use green chili instead of red chili powder.
The step-by-step process.
Cut the cabbage like this, it will be easier to steam and cook it. Take out the core, cut the side down on your cutting board, and start making a series of parallel verticals.
Add some salt and cook for at least 10 minutes on medium heat.
Add cooking out to the pan and fry the onions until golden brown. Then add salt, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. I have added some bay leaves and cloves as well. Add some water and cook it for 5 more minutes/until soft.
Add the big chunks of air potatoes and cook them for another few minutes with lead on. Then add the tomatoes. It will take a few minutes to combine them and cook well.
Lastly, add the steamed cabbages, mix them well, put a lid on and cook for another few minutes. It will take around 20 minutes in total to cook the whole dish.
When it becomes soft, turn off the heat and serve.
Doesn't it look delicious?
We usually eat it with rice. But it's good to go with roti and as a side dish to any other meal.
This recipe doesn't contain many things, only a few vegetables, and spices. But it tastes go good. Even if you can enjoy it as a main dish, nothing else is needed.
If you have not tried cabbage like this, try it once. You will get a pure taste of Bangladeshi cuisine.
Have a good day, everyone. πΏππΏ
