Hello friends, this week I have a few days off, which gives me more time to tend to my garden, and so in the last few days I've been spending more time in the garden because my magnolia decided to drop practically all its leaves at once. Anyone who has a magnolia knows how it is; the leaves are large, heavy, and when they get wet, they seem to multiply all over the lawn. Today I took advantage of the morning to clean up a bit and try to bring some order to that natural mess that the tree creates every year; I'm used to it by now.
I started by picking up the leaves that were most scattered across the lawn. Some were still damp from the previous night's rain, so they clung to the ground as if they were part of it, because where I live now it rains almost every day. Even so, I calmly gathered everything. I took one of those large black bags that I usually use for garden waste and started filling it. Between each handful of leaves, you could smell that sweet and earthy scent that magnolias have when they begin to dry. It's a scent that, despite announcing work, also brings a certain tranquility, almost as if the garden had its own rhythm and I was just there observing it. I love being able to observe this aspect of nature.
Thinking about it, I still remember that, a few years ago, I used to get irritated when I saw the ground covered like this. It always seemed like the garden was a mess, but now I approach these tasks differently. They may require some work, but they also force me to slow down, look around, and notice the time passing because there are small moments when I stop, look at the trees, listen to the birdsong, and even the soft rustling of the leaves as I pick them. They are simple things, but they make a difference in the day, and with the rush of daily life, I hadn't spent much time in the garden anyway, so this way I even have extra energy.
After collecting most of the leaves, I started separating some to use later because not everything goes to waste. Magnolia leaves are great for protecting the soil in some areas of the garden. They tend to last longer because they are thicker, so they work well as mulch to retain moisture. I also usually save some to put in the compost, although they take longer to decompose. But, with patience, everything transforms, and I loved seeing and observing this process, and I use it a lot in other crops in my garden.
At the end of the cleaning, I looked back and saw the lawn finally lighter and with a different appearance, despite the work it takes, but the result is fantastic, even though it's not perfect, because a garden is never truly finished, but it's better. And that feeling of seeing the result of our effort, even if small, is always pleasurable. In the end, I sat for a while on the wooden bench I have next to the tree and stayed there appreciating the space. Sometimes, with the stress of daily life, we don't always have time to appreciate nature, and sometimes that's enough to feel that the day was worthwhile a little fresh air, some manual work, and the satisfaction of taking care of a place that, in a way, also takes care of us.
Perhaps tomorrow there will be more leaves on the ground, that's almost certain in fact, it's almost certain there will be, but that's okay, it's part of the tree's cycle and now it's also part of my own rhythm in the garden. Each leaf that falls is just another reminder that everything changes slowly and that there is beauty even in these small routines, and I love my garden.

Pensando bem, ainda me lembro que, hรก uns anos, me irritava ao ver o chรฃo assim coberto.
