"The Muppets" (2015) was the perfect show that nobody liked.

For some time now, I've started to grow fond of the Muppets, thanks in large part to the 2011 film/reboot, as well as several classic films like Christmas Carol, Treasure Island, and The Muppets Takes Manhattan. However, I don't think I've ever connected so much with Jim Henson's creation as when I had the opportunity to watch "The Muppets" (2015), an ABC series that has a very particular style, inspired by series like The Office and Arrested Development.

And while for many of its more conservative fans this was a betrayal of the original formula that Kermit and his friends must follow, there is something particularly refreshing about seeing them operate within a much more cynical context, focusing more on having a fluid writing, but without abandoning the crazy gags that "The Muppets Show" has accustomed us to since its premiere in the 70s.

You see, unlike the original show, The Muppets 2015 is constructed as a mockumentary, where we closely follow the entire production process of a fictional talk show in Los Angeles starring Miss Piggy, a show in which all the Muppets are involved to a greater or lesser extent.

Created by Bill Prady and Bob Kushell, ABC's “The Muppets” is a perfect opportunity to explore these characters from a different perspective, while retaining their essential characteristics. Naturally, the mockumentary format lends itself to a much more verbal and almost “adult” style of humor, although everything remains faithful to Henson's vision.

Sadly, due to poor ratings after its premiere, The Muppets was cancelled (somewhat painful considering it was their first foray into prime-time television since the 90s) after only 16 episodes aired, however, while it's pretty sad to think about the wasted potential in the long run, I feel like the content we got was enough to provide us with a couple of hours of entertainment, and it's a format that I would honestly like to watch again, and I feel like it worked particularly well in the modern context we currently exist in, where social media and the internet already take a predominant role in our lives.

It has good music, an amazing script, cool guest and some of the more emotional moments I have ever seen in the muppets universe. Sooo, maybe, eventually Disney is going to do something with it in the small screen. For now, we can only rewatch.
