When we hold people at their worst moment, we deny the very possibility of growth that makes society functional. Second chances are reasons why most people have a chance to do life; hence, if that's taken from them, we'll just have unfulfilled people roaming around, which in turn will make a lot of potential go to waste.
Treating people only with their past will only give the impression of humans not evolving in knowledge. As people gain more information and emotional intelligence, they tend to change; judging a thirty-year-old man for what he did as an eighteen-year-old man is nothing but unreasonable. Knowledge improves with time for most, and with more knowledge, they say, comes more responsibility. One who didn't know better can realise in time and might act differently from what they were known for. The mere fact that they're acting differently should count for something, as it shows remorse and an entirely different mind. As such, it'll be inhumane not to give them another chance, all because of past knowledge and utterances.
Now, look at it this way. People make mistakes, does that mean they can't correct themselves?! I mean, that's why pencils have erasers, we as people tend to attribute our mistakes to external circumstances like stress, lack of information, or us having a bad day, while on the other hand, when the other person makes mistakes, we attribute it to their fundamental character and traits. Empathy means we treat others with grace, just as we treat ourselves.
To trust someone takes years of building, it takes seconds to break, and forever to repair. It's easy to write one off when it's not you, but will one be ok or happy if they're dealt the same blow?! I mean, people are quick to judge when it's not them, but they expect others to understand and give them another chance when it's them. Doesn't make sense. Treat others the way you'd love to be treated. Give them another chance because you'd want another chance too if you were in the same place.
With that said, it doesn't mean people should be insensitive in their submissions and say whatever; however, whether we like it or not, some people hold on to their past regardless of the change in their present. This goes to say, it's better safe than sorry, as sorry doesn't always erase a notion one has built about another. It might take a lot or probably never to change a notion.
In all that we do, we should try to do better in the end, when we think of crucifying others, we should first put ourselves in their place, we don’t go around throwing stones at others when there is plenty stones to go round, the funny thing is that everyone has one or two bad moments in the past, even when we may think it is only known by us alone, it can also be used against us.
