Charity, as I have said before, refers to any act of generosity or help rendered to another individual in need. Charity may go beyond the gift of money and can take many forms; some charity acts may include educational scholarship, either formally or informally. If an individual decides to teach another person or a group of other individuals a skill or trade without charging them a fee, so long as the aim of doing so is to help them.
The act of charity to me should be one in which the giver decides on their own to offer; when it becomes forced, it becomes a tax and not charity, as it should be referred to. We were taught in school that firms and companies have a social responsibility to the environment in which they operate. When these firms are executing these responsibilities, we should understand that they are fulfilling a duty to society. When people do things for others because they are forced to do so, it is, to my belief and understanding, that it is no longer referred to as charity but as a tax.
People are not coerced to be charitable, but rather they do that because they have decided on their own that they want to do something good for society or for others, not as a show or as a task, but simply as an act of good deed.
While it may not be right, when people are forced to help the needy in society, it may help to reduce the gap of inequality in society, since people with more than enough will be forced to share what they have with those in need. It will also ensure that every individual does their part in social welfare and responsibility to society.
However, rather than making giving compulsory in society, the larger firms could be charged a certain amount from their profits as tax for social development, which is already practiced in many countries, so to speak.
Charity is a deliberate act that people do and find joy in doing. When it is made compulsory for the populace, it will only create resentment and might lose its beauty. People should be encouraged to give and should not be made to give; giving to the needy is a personal decision and cannot be otherwise. When this is forced on people, it may create laziness amongst members of society and, as such, may affect the economic state of the society.
