To live in freedom
Es un concepto difícil el decir que vivimos en libertad, porque desde que nacemos dependemos de otras personas, como seres humanos la libertad y ser libre se van forjando.
La libertad como la entendemos es decidir por voluntad propia. Tenemos la capacidad para tener opciones a elegir, también para asumir las responsabilidades de nuestros actos. Particularmente ese vivir en libertad esta muy adentro de nosotros mismos. Podemos estar dentro de un espacio limitado y sentirnos libres.
It's a difficult concept to say that we live in freedom, because from birth we depend on others. As human beings, freedom and being free are things we forge.
Freedom, as we understand it, is deciding of our own free will. We have the capacity to choose and to take responsibility for our actions. This sense of living in freedom is deeply ingrained within ourselves. We can be confined within a limited space and still feel free.
En esta semana en la que estoy planeando un viaje, mi hijo me pregunta que voy a sentir al estar en libertad, sin fallas de luz, de agua y donde se cumplen las leyes. Yo le digo que esa libertad es relativa y aunque cuento con servicios afuera, el tener que salir de mi país para poder abrazar a mis hijos no es nada fácil, me causa estrés y preparativos.
This week, as I'm planning a trip, my son asks me how I'll feel being free, without power outages or water shortages, and where the laws are enforced. I tell him that freedom is relative, and even though I have services abroad, having to leave my country to hug my children isn't easy; it causes me stress and requires preparation.
Definitivamente ser libre o sentirse libre esta muy adentro en nuestro pensamiento. A veces es un trabajo el que nos aprisiona o simplemente nos cargamos con el trabajo u obligaciones de otras personas. Y definitivamente es nuestra culpa cuando esto ocurre, simplemente no hemos delegado labores para los miembros del hogar.
Being free, or feeling free, is definitely something deeply ingrained in our thinking. Sometimes it's work that imprisons us, or we simply burden ourselves with the work or obligations of others. And it's definitely our fault when this happens; we simply haven't delegated tasks to the members of our household.
Recuerdo que hace muchos años atrás una persona amiga cayo preso. Con animo de ayudarlo, al ir a visitarlo le preguntaba que necesitaba y se nos ocurrió la idea de enlazar la universidad con las clases de primaria que los presos estaban solicitando.Recogimos entre los amigos y parientes libros, cuadernos y mucho material escolar para llevárselo a la cárcel. Y tuve que presenciar como los guardias destruyeron la mayoría a pesar de nuestras protestas. La verdad al equipo educativo no le quedo muchas ganas de volver ayudar después de presenciar ese atropello. No resulta fácil mantener una buena actitud al ver estos episodios.
I remember many years ago a friend of mine was imprisoned. Wanting to help him, I visited him and asked what he needed. That's when we came up with the idea of connecting the university with the elementary school classes the prisoners were requesting. We collected books, notebooks, and lots of school supplies from friends and relatives to take to the prison. And I had to witness the guards destroy most of them despite our protests. The truth is, the teaching staff didn't feel very inclined to help again after witnessing that outrage. It's not easy to maintain a positive attitude when you see things like this.
Todos los venezolanos sabemos de esta lucha constante por la libertad. Pero no podemos depender solamente de ella, debemos continuar, seguir apoyando, creando y deseando esa libertad.
All Venezuelans are aware of this constant struggle for freedom. But we cannot rely solely on it; we must continue, keep supporting, creating, and striving for that freedom.
