Butterflies only consume liquids. They do this using a straw like tube called a proboscis. Amazingly when butterflies first emerge from their pupa or chrysalis the proboscis in in two parts with hooked edges which they attach together almost like a zipper by curling and uncurling the two halves until they fuse together into the tube they drink through.
This Heliconius Erato butterfly pictured below is slightly unusual in as much as it collects pollen and then liquifies this with chemicals before drinking it.
