Many things in the rainforest here in Costa Rica grow to a super size. These giant cicadas have shed their skins and left their shell like body casings stuck to the tree.

Bromeliads are plants that live with their roots in the air rather than soil. They attach themselves to trees very often and can be seen in the treetops or on the trunks of trees. This type when full grown can have leaves growing up to 1.5 meters and extraordinary beautiful flowers.

These huge leaves pictured above and below are around three meters high. They absolutely tower above the ground. They produce thick central stalks relatively short around 70 - 80 cm off the ground with thick red waxy flowers that attract hummingbirds.
