皆さん、こんにちは。早いものであと１ヶ月と１０日余りでクリスマスですね。
クリスマスといえば、サンタクロース、クリスマスツリー、クリスマス・プレゼント、七面鳥や鶏の丸焼き、ホワイト・クリスマス⋯ と色々思い浮かびますが、南半球にあるオーストラリアではクリスマスのイメージは少し違います。
There is only a month and 10 days to go until Christmas. Santa Claus, Christmas tree, prezzy, roasted turkey or chicken and of course white Christmas come to mind when we think of Christmas.
Christmas in Australia is very similar to British, Irish and American traditions. Christmas is usually set in winter for most of these countries. However in Australia, Christmas falls during summer.
There is no snow. It's really hot and the sun is intense while Christmas is symbolised as snow to other countries.
We enjoy potluck lunch with family in the backyard, having barbie (BBQ) under sunshine, sunbathing in the beach and might be camping. We sometimes go out carol singing on Christmas Eve.

私はこの国に住んで１８年経ちます。ここに住み始めてから、クリスマス時期に日本に帰省したり、北半球へ旅行したことがありません。ですのでここ１８年間、真夏のクリスマスしか経験していません。
こちらではクリスマスの日(25日) は、レストラン、小売店、スーパーマーケットやショッピングモールなどの商業施設はすべて閉まっています。
家族や親せきが集まり、それぞれ食べ物を持ち寄って自宅でクリスマスランチをします。天気が良ければ、自宅の裏庭や公園でバーベキューをしたり、ビーチで泳いだり日光浴をする人たちもいます。またクリスマス・イブには公園などの屋外で、クリスマス・キャロルを歌ったりします。
またクリスマスからお正月にかけて、キャンプに出かける人達もいます。

この国に住み始めた頃は、真夏のクリスマスに違和感を感じましたが、もうすっかり慣れました。
｢真冬のクリスマスでないと雰囲気がでない。｣という人達もいますが、真夏のクリスマスもなかなかいいもんですよ。
サンタクロースがサーフィンやBBQをしているクリスマス・カードを最初に見た時は ｢！！｣と思いましたけど、今ではそんなサンタに愛着を感じています。

実はオーストラリアやニュージーランドでは、7月に｢真冬のクリスマス｣をお祝いする地域もあります。
綿を雪に見立てて窓枠の飾り付けをしたり、部屋の中にクリスマスツリーを飾ったりします。そして、くしで刺したマシュマロを焚き火や暖炉に入れ、焼きマシュマロを作って食べます。
北半球のクリスマスを真似て真冬の7月に楽しむ方法です。
We celebrate mid winter Christmas in July, it's not even an official Christmas here.
July is the coldest month of the year in Southern Hemisphere. We enjoy an extra celebration e.g. decoration of the windows' frames with cottons, making snowman, marshmallow roasting in the bonfire and much more!
私の子供達が成人したら、クリスマス時期に日本に帰省して冬のクリスマスを経験したいと思います。
