I asked at the hostel reception which way it was to the lighthouse. The look I received was a mix of shock and confusion.
"aren’t you on a bike?"
Yeah
"Do you know how far it is?"
It's about 25 miles... I think
"Okay. Just checking. You know, I don't think people cycle out there, it's very hilly. I'm sure you can find a ride with someone from the hostel.”
Don't worry I’ll be fine on the bike
😱😱
If you've done any amount of cycling 25miles isn't really that far. Knowing you have to go back the same way making it 50+ miles with 5000 ft elevation gain while carrying all your gear, perhaps makes it worth a second thought. Still, it's worth it.
I probably could have got a ride, but I didn’t want to. Getting somewhere on your own steam primes you to be appreciative when you get there. I’m claiming there is no way you can get the same level of admiration, awe and sense of freedom that making a journey by human power gives you. Hike, bike, run, swim, climb, paddle you name it, I just think it’s worth more if you worked for it.
