In Mexico there are elections in the summer - violence is already increasing before upcoming vote. At least 30 candidates for local offices have been murdered so far.
Criminal organizations in Mexico repeatedly try to influence politics - and try to get rid of unpleasant politicians. At least 30 candidates have been killed before the summer elections. "We already count about 30 murders of people who wanted to candidate," said Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete.
Especially mayoral candidates and candidates for seats in regional parliaments were victims of violence. One of the hardest hit regions was the state of Guerrero in the southwest of the country. Navarrete urged political parties to campaign for electoral security, writes the newspaper El Mundo.
On 1 July, Mexico will elect the President, Members of both Houses of Parliament, eight Governors, Mayors of Mexico City and numerous other cities, as well as a number of regional assemblies.
The country suffers from persistent violence, especially organized crime. With over 29,000 murders last year was the bloodiest in two decades. More and more of small gangs are interfering in the business of drugs, stolen gas and protection money.
