Technology has always made human life more convenient, fun and in some cases, weird. The Modobag combines exactly these three qualities into a suitcase that you can ride.
If you look at the history of travel, our luggage has evolved lots of time over the decades. At first, people used to use large and heavy trunks to take their belongings with them, much like in the Harry Potter movies.
Then came the suitcase which was made of more lightweight materials and made things easier. The real innovation happened when someone attached wheels to these suitcases and it got a whole lot easier.
It seems like we were still not satisfied, or at least the team behind the Modobag wasn’t, because they have come up with a suitcase that you can ride on!
Before you start thinking about how you would like riding one or about its practicality, let me tell you about some of it’s specs that I found really cool.
Speed
The company is touting a speed upto 8 miles per hour upto a distance of 6 miles on a single charge. Also, it can carry a person weighing upto 260 pounds (118 kilos).
That’s more than 2.5 times the speed of walking which can be a really great time saver in case of those emergencies where you are just about to miss the plane.
Luggage Capacity
Of course one of the biggest concerns would be the luggage capacity. It really wouldn’t work if all the space is taken by the ‘ride mechanism’.
So, the company has managed to retain 80% of its capacity. So, you might have to pack a little less clothes.
Tracking
If you install the app on your phone, you can also do a real-time GPRS tracking of the suitcase and it allows you to set up a proximity alert so you’ll be notified if you get too far away from your modobag.
Charging Station
The Modobag also allows you to charge your electronic devices via its 2 USB ports. So, you can charge your phone or tablet on the go (literally). You might want to watch the amount of charging though as you would want to save it for the ride.
The battery inside the Modobag can fully charge in just an hour (wow!) and has a capacity of 4000 full charge cycles which is a really important metric specially if you travel frequently.
Approvals
The Modobag is fully approved by the TSA and FAA as a carry-on piece. So, there will be no worries of any troubles at the airport and can ride the thing freely throughout with the song playing in your head (or on the phone), “They see me rolling….they hatin’……”
Release Date
The company’s Indiegogo page states that the Modobag will be available in May of this year and the price will be just above $1000. That’s a hefty price but for a technology like this, I’m sure people will throw their money at it.
