It's been a tale of 2 Ball's so far this year in the NBA Summer League. Lonzo's first game had the Lakers questioning what the hell the did in the draft but Lonzo made them feel a little better his next time out.
Lonzo Ball's NBA Summer League debut with the Los Angeles Lakers did not go as planned. He shot a horrific 2 of 15 shots including only 1 of 11 from the 3 point line. One of the biggest concerns about Lonzo's game is his ability to hit shots from beyound the stripe. He has a very awkward and unorthodox jump shot. We shouldn't over react from 1 summer league game but Magic Johnson and the Lakers had to be concerned after watching his debut performance.
Lonzo bounced back in his next game, at least as his performance as a whole. He had a triple double with 11 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. What concerns me though is he had another poor shooting performance as he only made 1 of 5 shots from the 3 point line. I hope that Lonzo isn't a shoot first point guard and that he looks to set up his teammates first.
Another concern I have for Lonzo Ball is the lack of talent and shooters on the Lakers. He was blessed at UCLA with a coach that fit his up and down style in Steve Alford. Alford encourages his teams to run and try and out shoot their opponents. This played perfect for Lonzo to push the ball and attack the defender. Also, he had 2 of the best shooters in the NCAA with the coaches son, Bryce Alford and first round draft pick TJ Leaf who could run the floor and drain 3's from the wings. The NBA 's slower pace and half court sets will not be good for Lonzo.
I recently saw Lonzo play live in the first 2 rounds of the NCAA tournament in Sacramento. I was impressed with his court vision and athleticism but am very concerned with his outside shooting. For him to be successful in his rookie season, he needs to pass first and instead of shooting deep 3's, he needs to drive to the hoop and get to the free throw line.
What do you think he will do in his rookie season? Let me know! Cheers!
