World Piano Day takes place on the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated. In 2022, it’s March 29.
The day was founded to create a platform for piano-related projects and to promote music and joy of playing the piano.
Nils Frahm, German pianist and composer, initiated the day in 2015. When asked why the world needs a piano day, he replied: “For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener.”
Piano Day welcomes all kinds of piano lovers — young and old, amateur and professional, of any musical genre.
So, play your piano today. And if you don’t play piano, listen to someone play.

There are many pianos that are not being played for different reasons: they are broken, stored in piano shops or used as items of furniture rather than musical instruments.
At the same time, there are talented pianists who have no possibility to own a piano. Piano Day gives an opportunity for the holders of unused pianos to place them where they can be used and enjoyed by many people.
