Gurunirikshamānasya jnāna prapthiḥ bhavet dhruvam - If one waits for Sadguru with devotion, then jnana (divine knowledge) will certainly dawn upon that person. By expecting some worldly returns, waiting for a minister or for a higher officer will only result in sorrows and there are no much benefits. But, if one awaits for Sadguru, the embodiment of jnana, with thousand eyes, then it results in a lot happiness. One must not feel sorrowful for waiting so. It bestows ethereal pleasure and inexplicable bliss. Waiting is a great penance. To do this penance, one has to possess a stable and calm mind. Despite facing any number of obstacles, waiting for the darshan of Guru, for months and years together is said to be a "Maha yoga".
A disciple approached a Guru for upadesha (spiritual initiation). After residing in the ashrama for few days, Guru said, "Since you have already obtained Guru darshana, pada sparshana (divine touch of Guru's lotus feet) and sambhashanam (conversation with Guru), I will myself come to your house some other time and give you upadesha. So, you can now leave for your home. The discipline left and always was engrossed in the thoughts of Guru. A honey bee brings an insect, keeps it in a shelf and revolves around it with buzzing sound. The insect always waited for the time when the bee would pierce it. It always remembered the bee and listened to its sound. After sometime, the insect also took the form of the bee. This is known as "Bhramara kīta nyaya". The state of the disciple was in the similar state. In the thoughts of Guru, he waited for him so much that he even gave up sleeping. When he dozed off for a while, even then he felt as though his Guru had come.
In this manner, after few days passed by, the disciple went to have the darshan of Guru. The Guru said that he would come to his house the next day or the day after. He said, "O Gurudeva! Do not come to my home very soon because there is a great bliss waiting for you. I can meditate upon you easily" Let us also discuss one more instance here.
Udhhava went to Dwaraka and had the darshan of Krishna wholeheartedly and said to the Gopikas, "Our Lord is going to come here after few days." Do you know what they said? They said, "Oh! Krishna is going to come here. No, we don't want that to happen. We have happiness in changing his divine names." Kriya Yoga means to remember. There is Yoga in waiting. Constantly remembering Guru and doing one's duty itself is Kriya Yoga. Such a pure heart will be bestowed with jnana, with Guru's grace for sure. There are many devotees who remember Swamiji constantly in their hearts and chant the divine names. Whether Swamiji comes to their houses or not, they see Swamiji in their hearts and are happy. The reason why Swamiji is saying so is, "We may not obtain Sadguru all the times and in all circumstances. That is why, you must attain happiness in his memories. Let us pray that we attain such state. When we climb steps, we chant the names like Govinda, Govinda for every step. We do not feel the pain at all because we will have the darshan of the Lord very soon. Many devotees come to Datta Peetham after a lot of journey. Few people lose their bags and purses. They come with a lot of grief. But, as soon as they have the darshan of Swamiji, they do not remember anything that they have lost. They have the feeling that they have seen Swamiji. So, the waiting is equal to penance. When we wait for 2-3 hours in long queues and have the darshan of the divine Lord, then we forget everything. We take the photograph of Lord in our minds. We forget our sorrows, leg pains and sorrow for having the bags or purses. The recollection of the divine names is equal to having complete darshan.
Jai Guru Datta! Sri Guru Datta!
