From 1850 to 2013, this map shows how demographics have been changing the character of America over the last nearly 200 years.
Seeing this made me think of other maps I've seen about how empires have risen and fallen over time.
Maps from io9:
The Roman Empire or Imperium Romanum (West: 27 BC - AD 476, East: 330 - 1453)
Mongol Empire (1206-1368)
The Ottoman Empire (1299-1823)
French Colonial Empire (1534-1980)
While I do not think of the US as an empire (and it doesn't claim territory like empires of the past), it is still important to remember that just because we live in the modern age, the reality of demographic changes moving borders and affecting culture is no different than it was in the past.
The thing is, the West has stopped properly vetting those who come into their countries. Integration is possible when the incoming people are willing to accept the laws, language, values, and culture of the host nation. However, when newcomers value their native culture, language, and laws above those of the adopted countries they move to, then the character of the adopted country changes. And over time these changes affect the host nation as a whole.
History shows us what happens when these demographic changes occur: the US will change into something different.
Are we all prepared for this? Is this something we want? Even if we don't want this, is there anything that could be done?
Let me know what you think below :D
