There is a special thrill in working with devices and electronic hardware. When a moving or sensitive device component breaks down, I like to examine it and get to the bottom of the problem. Yesterday, one such new and exceptional experience was when I got the opportunity to work with the dial pad of an ATM machine's security lock.
Everyone knows how strict the security of an ATM machine is and how perfectly each part inside it is made. But due to long-term use or some mechanical fault, the dial pad of its security lock was completely inoperative or broken. After opening the external casing of the device, the real mystery came to light.
After opening the lock, I checked the circuit board or PCB and the connecting wires inside it. As can be seen in the first picture, a white connecting cable is attached to the main casing, which exchanges data with the internal security system. However, there is some damage or signs of insulation cracking in a part of the cable, which can sometimes cause signal loss or short circuit.
The circuit board is seen in detail. A small buzzer is visible on the surface of the circuit, which usually produces a 'beep' sound when a button is pressed or the lock is opened. In addition, some small resistors, LED diodes and transistors are arranged quite neatly.
The main reason behind the dial pad not responding completely was its internal connectivity and the weakness of some tracks on the PCB. In addition, the joint of the data cable was a bit wobbly. When I carefully separated the mechanical parts with the help of a hammer and screwdriver and took out the circuit, I realized that some components had stopped working due to overheating or carbon deposits.
Repairing such sensitive security hardware requires a lot of patience and fine work skills. Because a slight wrong connection can lock the entire security system.
Seeing the overall condition of the lock and its internal complexity, I felt once again the wonderful combination of technology and mechanical engineering. This experience was truly amazing.
