I have a very similar version for the future of Steem and as soon as I am done with Stratos communities will start work on Spire: a very simple and easy way to launch Steem sidechains on a determined protocol by simply creating a transaction! I definitely hope to get some hackathons set up for Steem sidechains as soon as I have these tools set up - so be on the lookout!
