My sorority sisters and I finally managed to get together over dim sum yesterday for Mother’s Day, and honestly, it felt like a small victory.
We hadn’t seen each other since New Year’s, which sounds recent until you realize how much life can happen in a few months. Schedules, kids, work, family... all the usual things that make coordinating grown‑women calendars feel like a challenge.
But somehow, we did it. And the moment we sat down, it was as if no time had passed at all.
There’s something comforting about slipping right back into our old rhythm. The teasing starts immediately... the kind only people who’ve known you since your questionable fashion choices in college can get away with. Someone always reaches for the har gow first, someone else pretends they’re “being good” and then ends up eating half the table. We all pretend we’re going to pace ourselves, and we all fail. Tradition is tradition.
Between the laughter and the clinking tea cups, I found myself watching them — these women who’ve seen me through every version of myself. We’ve grown up, grown older, grown into our lives. Some of us are moms, some of us are caretakers, some of us are just trying to keep our plants alive. But the bond stays steady. It’s not loud or dramatic. It’s just there, like muscle memory.
Maybe that’s the quiet magic of sisterhood. You can go months without seeing each other, and then one shared meal pulls everything back into place. A couple baskets of dumplings, a pot of jasmine tea, and suddenly we’re twenty again, laughing too loudly and talking over each other.
I left feeling full... not just from the food, though that certainly didn’t hurt. But from the reminder that some connections don’t fade. They just wait patiently for us to come back to the table.
Happy Mother's Day!!!
