Hello friends and welcome back to my page
In today's post, I would like to tell you what I think is the most beautiful city in Tuscany, from my point of view and experience, one of the most underrated beautiful places is the city of Volterra, this delightful Tuscan town that somehow became famous because the TV series Twilight was set here, but Volterra has hidden gems.
Let us begin by saying that Volterra, even on a tourist level, is much more liveable as a city unlike the chaotic city of Florence, it is located in the heart of practically the Pisan countryside south-west of the regional capital Florence.
This small town has almost 10,000 inhabitants and was in antiquity one of the main towns of ancient Etruria. In fact, there is also an important museum here, with many exhibits from the Etruscan era.
Remember that in addition to the TV series Twilight, the TV series about the Medici family, the lords of Florence, one of the greatest families of the Renaissance era, was also filmed here, but this place is also famous for alabaster crafting, in fact in the city we can find many craftsmen creating beautiful objects.
One of Volterra's main attractions is undoubtedly the Palazzo dei Priori, apparently the oldest town hall in the entire region, and if you notice from the photo, it looks a lot like the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
In fact today it houses the Municipality of Volterra, and this palace was built around 1200, on the main wall you can see all the plaques of Florentine families, this change was made when the city was governed by Florence.
This city, like other Tuscan cities, was Roman soil,In fact, around 1950, an ancient Roman theatre, dating from around the first century BC, was discovered in Volterra, a faithful copy of the famous Greek theatres.
It would take a 3D reconstruction to make people realise how impressive this theatre was, which could hold up to 3500 spectators, in fact it had a roof that made it usable even when the weather conditions were practically bad.
Think how clever they used to be, I was speechless!
I definitely recommend, a nice walk through the streets of Volterra, among the many shops that populate the city, you will surely have some special encounters with some statues that are put up by local artists.
For people who love macabre things, in Volterra there is the Museum of Torture comma, which I did not have the courage to visit.
The other attraction that is definitely worth a visit is the Medicean fortress An imposing castle combined with Volterra's beautiful defence walls, this castle represented Florence's domination over the city of Volterra, even if this came with difficulty because it was an enviable summer fortress in Renaissance history.
Unfortunately, this beautiful castle cannot be visited because it is a comma state prison and as far as I understand it is only opened at special events.
Write below in the comments if you agree with me that Volterra is one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany, I hope you enjoyed my story and description of the city, see you in the next post.
Hello everyone!!!
