So this one is a keg ale (also sold in bottle I believe) originally made as a collaboration between Shipyard Brewing Company and Marston’s (the guys who make Pedigree) in the UK. It is 4.5% and quite a pleasant session beer. I’ve even heard that it was so popular here in England that it is now being brewed back across the pond.
The first time I tried this beer, I had been drinking some stupidly strong IPA’s and it kind of ruined the experience for me as my taste buds had been destroyed by a mixture of citrus and hops from 7% diesel. So I decided to give it another go and I’m very happy I did.
The beer is best served chilled and is really easy drinking. Its quiet smooth, thinner than I expected on the mouthfeel. It is not over powering in its hoppiness with a pleasant citrus sweetness to it. The aftertaste is quiet subtle as well, almost urging you to take another sip. It is served through a sparkler normally, so will take a few moments to settle after pouring. From trying it both with and without the sparkler the difference was noticeable (slightly smoother) and I would choose for it to be served this way if given the choice.
In the current beer market everyone seems to be releasing these super strong beers which are almost a test of endurance rather than an enjoyable experience. Shipyard Pale ale shows there is nothing wrong with taking a classic beer style and delivering a pale ale with a great flavour, at a session beer percentage.
